The 21st century has marked a turning point in history, fueled by expanded social acceptance of diversity and enhanced opportunities for the gay and lesbian community. Yet, there is still a long way to go until we reach equality and eradicate discrimination based on race, gender, age and sexual orientation.
A Battle for Equality
Although gays and lesbians have acquired many rights over the years, they are still subjected to unequal treatment at times. One thing is clear, however: education and communication will play critical roles in resolving these issues. For one, increased education will enable more members of the gay and lesbian community to reach positions of power, which will give them the means to tackle legislation head on. Secondly, both education and communication will help other people become more tolerant individuals.
As education and communication become more focused and accessible, new ideals can build on progress that has already been made. Many companies make a conscious effort to recruit gays and lesbians, and most colleges have created networks and clubs to promote awareness and support. In addition, Governments around the world are moving towards acceptance. We’re not there yet, but we’re getting closer day by day.
